Westport Men's Triples

Thrilling Finish to an Excellent Triples Championship
The Triples Championship featured 12 teams this year in a series of matches that provided some close contests and a final full of quality bowling with a thrilling finish. The first round had some wide winning margins, but the second round saw some closer contests with R Parry, P Budnick and R Coombes losing 23-24 to B Burdekin, J Haines and N Cobcroft and C Bourke, J Lorentzen and I White going down 23-20 to B Maher, G Hayes and K Martin. T Morrison, J Wyper and J Baker were beaten 29-25 by K Rivett, S Rossi and K Waters after coming back from a 17-1 start.
In the semi finals K Waters team were beaten 29-17 after a poor 16-1 start, but the semi between P Stockham and N Cobroft’s teams went down to the wire 23-20 after Noel Cobcroft had established an 11-4 lead after 10 ends to see Peter Stockham narrow the margin 16-16 at 17 ends to hold the lead until the end.

The final between Brendan Maher, Glenn Hayes and Keith Martin vs Michael Pearson, Greg Brims and Peter Stockham was a game worthy of a final. Peter Stockham held the lead by a small margin until the 20th end when Keith Martin drew level at 17-17, Peter led 19-18 after 22 ends, Keith took the lead 20-19 on the next end, Peter responded and led 21-20 on the 24th end, Keith drew level at 21all on the 25th end forcing an extra end to be played and went down by 1 shot on the final end to lose 22-21. An excellent game of bowls and a credit to all who played in the game.
