Westport Men's Major Fours Champions (L-R) Col Baldwin, Paul Budnick, Peter Taylor & Greg Brims
The Men's Major Fours competition finished on Sunday 19th August in what can only be described as very trying conditions. The early rounds didn't see too many upsets and progressed to the semi finals on the morning of the 19th in windy conditions. The team of Col Baldwin, Paul Budnick, Greg Brims and Peter Taylor played Al Alexander, James O'Reilly, Paul Schliebs and Matt Lacey, after a very even start Peter Taylor's team powered away to a 21-6 lead on the 13th end and while Matt's team rallied in the final ends Peter's team went on to record a 23-11 win.
On the other rink the team of Terry Morrison, Billy O'Neill, Noel Cobcroft and Ron Coombes were opposed to Glenn Hayes, John Styles, Peter Butler and Peter Stockham. Ron's team made a spirited start leading 8-1 after 5 ends and although Peter's team closed the gap to trail 17-19 after 17 ends, Ron Coombes team went on to score a well earned 23-19 victory.
If the morning conditions were windy the afternoon was horrendous with blustery winds making the play very trying. Ron Coombes team had another good start to lead 4-1 after 4 ends, but then trailed 11-9 after 12 ends, with both teams finding the conditions challenging for good bowls. Unfortunately Ron's team went scoreless for 6 ends while Peter's team built a 22-9 lead to eventually take out the final 22-12 in a very well played competition.
