Port City Men's Bowling Club Bulletin - April / May 2012
President’s Report – Reg Lucas
This is to
confirm the rumours going around about my decision not to stand for the
position of President of Mens Bowling
Club at the next AGM. I made the
decision, that after 8 wonderful years of leading this great club, I felt it
was time to step down and let someone else take the reins. ( I will say more in
my report at the A.G.M.)
As we are half
way through the pennant season, I want to congratulate the teams on their
performances so far. The majority of the teams are either leading, or running a
close second, so keep up the good work. It would be a wonderful result if the
grade 7 plaayers could go on and win the Zone playoffs, and then represent our
club at the State Playoffs which are to be held at our club in early August.
Don’t forget
that the Vet’s and Super Vet’s day will be held on the 12th April,
so if you haven’t put your name down for that day, make sure you do. ( Sheet on
the board).
The secretary
received correspondence from a Mr. Ian Hicks, of Lemon Tree Passage informing
us that he was in possession of what he
believed was one of the original Port City Club badges which was owned by his
father Harry Hicks. ( Harry was on the committee of the club, and held a number
of club champion during his time. The committee has decided to frame the badge
and display it in the trophy cabinet.
The RNSWBA have
increased their fees by $3 from the 1/6/12. the total fees will now be $61. The RNSWBA new
constitution has now been adopted.
The Prawn and
Chicken night will be held on Thursday the 7th June 2012. The date
had to be changed as our normal date clashed with other tournaments.
It has been
proposed that we hold a charity day to raise monies for the Jim Bruce Urology
and Prostate Cancer Fund. We are awaiting a decision on whether we can run it
in conjunction with the Staff
Charity Day. We will let you know when we have more information.

Bowls Report –
Charlie Buchanan
Well, pennant is near the half way point with grades 3-4-5
and 7(1) on top of the ladder. Let`s hope we can keep up the momentum and go on
and win a few flags. Unavailability has been a big problem for selectors this
year and it does not help us to keep the teams together. After three rounds we
have had to make 53 positional changes to all of the pennant teams.
On a brighter note congratulations to “Dexter”
Bradbury-“Fast Eddie” Dasczyk-“Archie” Judge and “Bomber” Buchanan on winning
the 2012 Club Fours Championship.
The “Blue Ribbon” event of the club, the men`s 2012 Singles Championship was taken out by Frank Smith, this being his first singles title at Port City.

The 6th series of the corporate bowls has
concluded with the “Travelling Bowlers” team of G. Hewson - W. Skane and that
man “Dexter Bradbury” winning a great final. This is the third time that the
travelling bowlers team has won this event, but they did donate their winnings
back to charity “Well done Boys”. This was a great series with 28 teams participating
and all monies raised were donated to charity. The charity who benefited this
year was Port Macquarie M.S.
The Port City Singles previously sponsored by “Aevum Living”
will be starting on Monday 30th April through to Thursday 3rd
May 2012. This event is full with 96 players entered and a number of reserves
on standby.
Previous winners who have entered are Sam Laguzza 1986-1988-1996-2006, Rex Johnston 1998-2008, Ian Taylor 1993, Bruce Anderson 1994, Geoff McGillivray 1998, Shane Gittoes 2009, David Holt 2010 and last year`s winner Rowan Brassey. Some of the other stars to enter are the world under 25s Singles Champion Ben Twist, Irish International Jeremy Henry, Australian representative Mathew Pieterson, South African International Neil Burkett and NSW State player Shane Globits.
This is a fantastic field put together by our bowls co-ordinator Charlie so make sure you come along and support this great lot of talent to see who will be the 2012 champion. A sheet will be on the board for markers (men & Women) to make themselves available on the qualifying days of Monday & Tuesday. We need 24 markers each day, and this is a great opportunity to be up close to all the action.

head which includes lunch.
The “Australian Unity” Men`s Classic Pairs will be held from
Wednesday 13th June through to Friday 15th June 2012 with
$5300-00 prize money up for grabs. This event is filling fast so make sure you
don`t miss out by not entering.
Greens
Report - Greenkeeper Nigel
Nigel is on holidays so I will present his report on his
behalf. (Nigel is having a well earned rest and is preparing for the large
number of very important tournaments the club will be holding).
Firstly, I would like to congratulate Nigel and his staff
for a job well done. When we reflect back about four or five years ago, the
condition of the greens left a lot to be desired.
We had “fairy rings and other fungal diseases” which we couldn’t seem to eliminate. However through the hard work and commitment of our staff the greens are now in a fantastic condition. I say that especially when you consider the amount of traffic on the greens on a weekly basis, when 3 greens are in play for about 6 days a week, and on top of that we have social bowls events, such as local business staff parties, birthday functions and corporate bowls events.
