The following is a news release from Charlie Buchanan, Bowls Coordinator, Port City regarding the upcoming singles competition.
Internationals Tackle Locals
The 2012 Port City Singles starts on Monday 30th April and runs through to Thursday 3rd May 2012 to be played at the Port Macquarie City Bowling Club with $16,500 prize money on offer.
This prestigious event that will see ninety six bowlers taking part in sectional play on Monday and Tuesday 30th April and 1st May starting at 9-00 a.m.
The 24 sectional winner`s then contest three games on Wednesday 2nd May to determine the quarter finalists. The finals are on Thursday 3rd May with the grand final scheduled for the afternoon at about 1-30 p.m.

The field for this year`s event is studded with internationals, state and local champions. There are five previous winners returning to being the first bowler to win the title for the second time which first started in 2005. Previous winners 2006 Sam Laguzza (Swansea), 2008 Rex Johnston (Tuncurry), 2009 Shannon Gittoes (Musgrave Hill), 2010 David Holt (Cabramatta), 2011 Rowan Brassey (Cabramatta).
All of the above champions will up against Irish international Jeromy Henry, visiting Port Macquarie for the first time after winning the 2012 World Singles Championship at Warilla last month. Australian squad member Matt Pieterson from St Johns Park will also be playing for the first time along with other St Johns Park representatives.
Cabramatta`s Michael Clarke and Matt Gallop will also be tough opposition who have a wealth of experience at this level. Former South African Neil Burkett from Merrylands and former Australian player Ian Taylor with the unusual action will also be playing.

Local area bowlers expected to shine are Shane Globits a current NSW representative and Tony Miller from North Haven, Peter Stockham and Bruce Anderson from Westport, Alan Wares and John O`Neill (Kew) and Peter Taylor (Kempsey Heights).
Port City bowlers playing are Tom Robinson, Keith Ashdown, Jai Whelan, Phil Davidson, Geoff Worley, Bob Waterhouse, Chris Thornton, Paul Barry, Ian Binder and Jim Lamb.
“We`re looking forward to another successful tournament, as I believe this is the best field that we have assembled, since we revised and changed the format in 2005 which has proved to be very popular” bowls co-ordinator Charlie Buchanan said. “It provides a great opportunity for locals both experienced and up and coming youngsters – to compete against and mix with the top bowlers”.
