The Mixed Pairs Championship attracted a healthy 13 teams this year and play commenced on the 25th November. As with all our championship events this year the first round saw some very close contests with Denise Penney and Dave Griffiths getting home over Sylvia McCallum and Dave Hickey after they had established a winning lead of 17-11 on the 19th end with Sylvia and Dave falling short 17-14 at the end. Anna Zhao and Billy O’Neill came from 18-25 down on the 19th end to defeat Kaye Stingel and Glenn Hayes 26-25 managing 8 shots on the final 2 ends. The Quarter Finals also saw close contests with Leonie Laws and Paul Moon establishing an early 7-1 lead over Gerry Lavender and Noel Cobcroft to fall behind by the 9th end and trail the whole game to fall agonisingly short 20-19 after winning the last 2 ends. On another rink Lyn Delmoro and Jim Gaskill were leading Ron and Carol Owen 13-11 on the 18th end only to lose the last 3 ends and concede 8 shots going down 19-13. The semi final between Anna Zhao and Billy O’Neill vs Ron and Carol Owen was fairly one sided with Ron and Carol registering a comfortable 25-8 win, while the other semi was a very close fought affair with Denise Penney and Dave Griffiths finishing over the top of Gerry Lavender and Noel Cobcroft 25-21.

The final was played on Sunday 3rd December in glorious conditions, if not a little warm and saw a great contest between Denise and Dave vs Ron and Carol. The Husband and wife combination raced out to a 10-1 lead after 6 ends before Denise and Dave steadied the ship and a game long tussle commenced. They chipped away at the lead to get within 2 shots at the 15th end before Ron and Carol won the 16th and 17th ends to hold a 14-10 lead. Denise and Dave then went on to win the remaining 4 ends to triumph 19-14 in what was an excellent game of bowls played with great spirit. It was a nice finish for Denise and Dave who were runners up in the event in 2016.
