Vale Lorna Whitehead

TRIBUTE TO LORNA

It would take too long to detail all of Lorna’s achievements on and around the bowling greens of this district, but I would like to outline her relationship with this club.

Lorna joined Port City Bowling Club in 1964 – that is 47 years ago.

The Women’s Club was in its infancy – just 10 years old and it was only 2 years after joining that Lorna went on to committee.

She was then 36 years without a break, serving in different capacities on committee. These included two separate periods as President. Lorna then served a three-year period as District President and came back on our Port City Committee as Vice-President in 2006 for another 3 years

While all this organisational stuff was happening, don’t imagine that Lorna was just sitting at a desk doing the bookwork, attending meetings and making speeches. No – she was also out on the greens winning.

She won 9 singles championships, many pairs, triples and fours championships and lots of pennant flags for this club.

However, it was not only what Lorna achieved on and off the greens, but the way that she did it.

Her modesty, her sportsmanship and her generosity of spirit were an example to us all. She was a mentor to many of us and always willing to pass on her knowledge and to give wise counsel and to progress with the times. Lorna had a deep and abiding love for the Port City Bowling.

It was a source of great pleasure to the Women’s Club that the Board saw fit to honour Lorna by naming a green after her.

Thanks to Anne Connell, Port City WBC, for this Tribute to Lorna.
