Port City Men’s Bowling Club Bulletin - June / July 2012
The following Bulletin has been received from the Port City Men's Bowling Club.
"I will commence this newsletter for those armchair critics who complain, moan, and whinge about how the committee run the club, and voice their opinions about how the selectors should have done this or that.
This is your opportunity to nominate for the committee or selectors at this year’s AGM, which will be held on the SATURDAY 21st JULY 2012. The Secretary Keith Scotney will place the notice of the impending meeting on the board, informing us that all positions for the committee and selectors will be vacant.

During the last pennant season there was a lot of gossip, rumour, and innuendo going around as to how the chairman of selectors is appointed. I will quote the by-law relating to the selectors for everybody's information.
1.8. SELECTORS:
1.8.1. The Bowls Co-Ordinator, by contractual arrangement, is automatically a member of the Selection Committee. The remainder of the Selection Committee is elected each year by the members at the AGM. The Selection Committee, at their first meeting each year, shall elect a Chairman for that committee. The duties of the Selection Committee are:
1.8.1.1. Select all Pennant sides
1.8.1.2 Select any other Club representative teams.
1.8.1.3. Arrange trial and practice matches as required.
1.8.1.4. Determine all handicaps for Club events such as the Handicap Triples.
Any member who wishes to have a copy of the By-Laws, or a list of duties that relate to the position/s that you wish to nominate should contact a committee member.
Don’t forget the Chicken & Prawn night which will be held on Thursday the 7th JUNE 2012 starting at 6pm. It will be held downstairs in the bowlers lounge.

Bowls Report – Charlie Buchanan
The 2012 pennant season is finally over with very disappointing results from all grades. With only 44 per cent of bowler`s playing the required 10 matches, it was a nightmare for selectors to pick compatible and consistent teams.
The selectors for next season must decide on which road to travel to improve our playing and availability requirements, and until this happens, we will continue down the same path of disenchantment with no success. On a brighter note, championships continue with congratulations to Frank Smith on winning the Singles & Pairs titles for 2012.

Congratulations to our juniors Callum Murray and Jai Whelan on their results in the Zone 14 Junior Championships. Also a special mention to Jai, on being selected in the senior district team for the first time.
The Port City Singles turned out to be another great event with the Cabramatta Club once again winning the event with Matt Gallop defeating Hathead`s Wayne Buckley. A big thank you to all the markers, umpires and helpers that put in to make this a most successful event.
The next big event was the NSW Greenkeeper`s State Championships which was played in lovely sunshine over four days, they were a great bunch of blokes who thoroughly enjoyed their week of bowls and Nigel, Dean, Darren and Big Ears are to be congratulated on the way they prepared the greens. A number of greenkeepers commented on the way the greens ran and said it was a pleasure to play on. Port City will be hosting this event again in 2013.
Other tournaments coming up are the “Australian Unity” $5, 300 Prestige Pairs which still has a couple of vacancies. The $20,000 “Toohey`s” Grade 6 & 7 Triples is booked out and I am only taking reserve teams.
Our biggest and most prestigious event for the Port City Bowling Club is the hosting of the NSW Grade 7 Play-Offs. A lot of planning has to be arranged to make this event run smoothly and any member who would like to assist the men`s committee please see the bowls office so that we can put your name in the mix.
Greens Report - Greenkeeper Nigel
It was very pleasing to be able to play and mix with my fellow greenkeepers during the recent State Greenkeepers Championships held at the club recently. These fellows can be your harshest critics and it was nice to receive compliments on the way the greens were presented.
However on a sour note, it was reported to me that one of our senior playing members (no names) was really “bagging” our greens to my fellow greenkeepers. It is very disappointing to me and the green staff to hear derogatory remarks being directed at the green staff from a senior player. If you have any complaints etc. about the greens please see the greens director.
You may have seen green patches on the greens, but that is the fungus “Ground Pearl” and is being kept under control."
Thanks to Jordan Humphries and Garry Williams for this bulletin
