Gallop takes out Port City Classic Singles Title

Matt Gallop - Cabramatta

Wayne Buckley - Hat Head

Matt Gallop (Cabramatta) took out the Port City Classic Open Singles title this afternoon with a 21 - 9 over Wayne Buckley (Hat Head). Both players gave the spectators an excellent exhibition of draw bowling.

Matt may not be well known as yet but at 24 years old he has a great future in bowls. A Kiwi, he has an impressive record in New Zealand and has been chosen to represent New Zealand in the 2012 World Bowls Championships.

Two "star" photographers, Anne Connell and John Shaw, have promised me some photos from today - I'll post them in the photo album later.

The following is a summary of today's play thanks to John Shaw that provides additional details of Gallop's wins today.

"The semi-finalists were Wayne Buckley, Ian Taylor, Matthew Gallop and Jeremy Henry.

On the first rink Ian Taylor went up against Wayne Buckley whilst on the other rink Jeremy Henry was pitted against Matthew Gallop

Buckley went on to win 21 – 4  in the first semi-final.

In the second semi Jeremy Henry shot out to a 14- 4 lead over Gallop, but Gallop knuckled down and drew to level the score 14 – 14. From then until the end of the game it was neck and neck. With the scores level at 18 – 18, Gallop finally took the lead for the first time in the match and ended up winning 21 – 18.

The final Buckley vs Gallop

Some very accurate top flight bowls by both players and a tight game up until to the score got to 8 – 8, when Gallop put on the afterburners and drew away to win  the championship 21 – 9"
