KENO NSW Blues Women

The KENO NSW Blues have claimed honours in the Men’s and Women’s Open Test Series against Victoria, with the Big V getting the better of the Blues in the Men’s & Women’s Senior and U25 events. Both our Men’s and Women’s Open Sides were in fine form, claiming 3-0 series sweeps. The result is particularly impressive considering the absence of our Australian Jackaroos representatives Ellen Ryan, Tash Van Eldik, Carl Healey, Ben Twist, Corey Wedlock, Aaron Wilson and Jesse Noronha.

In the Women’s Open Side, it was a standout series for the rink of Sarah Boddington, Natalie Noronha, Jamie-Lee Worsnop and Dawn Hayman who enjoyed three wins with a margin of +41. Equally as impressive was the Men’s Open rink of Mason Lewis, Lee Stinson, Ray Pearse and Lee Schraner who also won all three of their matches with a margin of +30.

The going was tougher for our Over 60’s and U25 Sides who played admirably but weren’t able to get over the line against the Vics.

Congratulations to all players involved in what was another high quality series! Next up for NSW is the Queensland Test Series at Taren Point Bowling Club from 22-23 August. Bowls NSW will be live streaming selected matches from the event, stay tuned for more information.

Bowls is the Best Sport in the Country, and Now we Have Proof

Eighteen Australian lawn bowlers will return from the Birmingham Commonwealth Games with a collective three gold and three silver medals. It’s a record haul for the Aussies who had previously never won lawn bowls gold in the UK, and has undoubtedly cemented Australia’s position as the best bowling nation in the world.

There’s a lot to be said about the success of the Australian squad, but their greatest achievement over the last fortnight won’t be found within medal tallies or seen on the podium. Whether they know it or not, these athletes have put lawn bowls in the media spotlight and to the attention of the sporting world, breaking down long-established stereotypes along the way.

Those of us who play bowls know all too well the standard tropes tagged to our sport, particularly the phrase “bowls is just for old people”.  Whether uttered in conversation or seen in well-meaning advertisements, this perception has stuck to the sport like grippo to a bowl and is enough to make our collective eyes roll. For so long, bowls has tried to showcase itself as a fun, competitive sport for people of all ages.

Inter-Schools Challenge Going From Strength to Strength

The Bowls NSW Inter-Schools Challenge continues to bring students to the greens, letting them compete for the chance to make the State Finals and teaching them the basics of lawn bowls along the way.

Over the last two weeks, three events have been held in the Greater Sydney Region at Cabramatta, Chatswood and Gymea Bowling Clubs. Bowls Australia RBM Darren Morrison helped oversee all three qualifying events and was impressed with the quality of bowls on display. “Twenty teams of triples from All Saints College took to the greens at Cabramatta, with all students going through programs at Cabra Bowls. Considering how many of these students were new to bowls, it was fantastic to see so many great bowls played throughout the day.”

It was a similar story at Gymea Bowling Club and Chatswood Bowling Club, with each qualifying day hosting four local teams. The Chatswood Bowling Club must be congratulated for how they have coached the students, as noted by Darren Morrison. “The students knew how to play in each position and knew how to score and measure. With the kids only having three lessons before the competition, they were very advanced in playing the game. Chatswood also went out of their way to provide trophies for the winning team.”

Congratulations to all teams who participated, and in particular those who have qualified for the High Schools Challenge State Finals!
