Bowls NSW Newsletter - mid July 2022

Welcome to the mid-month July edition of the Bowls NSW Newsletter!

The Junior Inter-Zone 7-A-Side Championship at Club Dubbo was a huge success, with U18 players from across NSW and ACT getting together to compete and to make new friends along the way. Bowls NSW would like to thank our host venue Club Dubbo, as well as all the committed parents, guardians and volunteers from around NSW who selflessly devote their time to developing our juniors.

The NSW State sides have officially been announced for the upcoming Test Series against Victoria at Moama BC from 6th – 7th August. A huge congratulations to all players selected as well as those who were selected to trial in the State Selection Series earlier this year.

Bowling clubs in NSW are receiving funding from the NSW Government after they announced the latest recipients of their Local Sport Grant Program. Read more to find out how much money is being injected into our clubs, and to find out how you can apply!

Juniors Flock to Club Dubbo for
Inter-Zone 7-A-Side

Over 100 juniors were present at Club Dubbo to take part in the 2022-23 Inter-Zone 7-A-Side Championship at Club Dubbo. In chilly conditions, competitors took to the greens to participate in singles, pairs and fours matches with the ultimate aim of winning through their section.

The competitors put in some incredible performances, making life difficult for the State Junior Committee tasked with selecting State Junior sides for the upcoming Test Series against Queensland. While for some it is a chance to impress in front of the right people, for many juniors the event was an opportunity to meet and play against others from around the state and to make new friendships.

This combination of competitiveness and camaraderie is what makes the Junior Inter-Zone 7-A-Side so special. There is something for everyone, and it makes for a wonderful experience that the players will not forget.

Zone 4 Grey Win Junior Inter-Zone Championship

The title of Champion Zone has gone down to the wire in the Junior Inter-Zone Championship, with Zone 4 Grey edging out Zone 16 by a slender two points. The Champion Zone is decided on a system that allocates points based on each discipline, so the higher a player or team finishes in any discipline, the more points they have allocated to their Zone.

Zone 4 Grey earned their place at the top of the list courtesy of a Gold Medal in the fours, a Bronze Medal in the singles and a fourth place finish in the pairs. Zone 16 were close behind with two fourth place finishes and a Gold Medal of their own in the Pairs. Incredibly, if the Singles Bronze Medal match was won by Zone 16, they would have leap-frogged Zone 4 Grey into the position of Champion Zone, highlighting how close the final standings were.

The reality though is that Zone 4 Grey were deserving champions, and all participating teams did themselves and their clubs, Zones and families proud! Congratulations also to the ACT, who for the first time in Junior Inter-Zone history entered a side to participate in the event. We hope that this will be the first of many sides entered!

Mona Vale Bowling Club would like to congratulate two of their long term and most valued members - Judy and Keith Brown who were successful in winning the club mixed pairs this year. They were certainly well-deserved winners.

Keith is a sprightly 95-year-old and is a very much loved member of the club. Judy also won the Women’s Champion player of the year and is also a a favourite amongst members.

Judy has held many positions at the club over the years.  She has served on the Board and been President of the Women’s Club.  Judy devotes the majority of her time to helping the club, particularly the men's and women's events.

Everyone in the club would like to thank both Judy and Keith for their friendship and wish them many more years on the greens.

12% Super Guarantee by 2025
- Small Increases Equal Big Benefits

logo

The superannuation guarantee (SG) is the percentage of wages that employers pay into your super fund on behalf of most employees. It’s an important part of the superannuation system and adds up to support Australians financially in retirement overtime. From 1 July 2022, the SG rate will be 10.5%.

12% by 2025

The super guarantee has been legislated to rise incrementally by half percent each year until it reaches 12% in 2025. This is good news for workers receiving superannuation. While such a small increase may not sound like much – over time, it could have a big impact on the retirement savings of Australians.

What difference does 10.5% SG make?

The SG increase means people won’t have to work as long to save the same amount for their retirement. Even small increases to the SG could make a big difference in the long run.

Keep track of your super increase to 10.5%

Employers are required by law to pay a minimum of 10.5% into eligible employee super accounts from 1 July 2022. You can check your pay slip and super account to see that this has been done.

To read more on how the super guarantee increase could impact retirement savings for Australians and what employees can do to make sure they’re getting 10.5%, read the full AustralianSuper article here.
