Wayne Garvan of North Haven recently took part in the 2016 Transplant Games held in Sydney. Wayne was one of 600 athletes who took part and it is sobering to realise that each of the athletes participating would not have been there except for the gift of an organ. Six hundred people donated an organ so that these athletes could lead a normal life. Six hundred sounds a lot but that number could be even greater if people took a moment to register as a donor and spoke to their relatives to ensure their wishes are respected.
Wayne came home with
two gold and two silver medals; gold in the lawn bowls singles and bocce
singles and silver in the bocce pairs and ten pin bowling pairs. All of the
participants won gold for being able to take part.
