Kew Men's Bowls - Kew Wins NSW State Pennant Finals

Kew Wins NSW State Pennant Finals at Armidale

Thanks to Andrew Richards for this new release dated Sunday the 26th May.

Dean Noble, of Kew Country Club,  presented new jackets to members of the Kew Men's Bowling Club, who proudly won the Men's Division 4 Pennant for the Mid North Coast. As Zone 14 Winners, they represented the Mid North Coast at the NSW State Playoffs held at Armidale from Tuesday 21st May to Thursday 23rd of May.

Team members included (left to right in photo) Frank Raczka, Rocky Davis, Dean Noble (Kew Country Club), Wayne Thrussell, Barrie Isaac (Club President), Ian Hodgkinson, Stewart Rogan, Dave Jones, Brett Irwin, Gary “Sparra” Cheers, Adrian Hilton and “Chicka” Thompson.

In the preliminary rounds at Armidale, Kew played Tuncurry Beach and Hamilton North, winning through to the Quarter Finals, where they defeated Bega 39-37 in a closely fought game. In their Semi Final, Kew Skippers Wayne Thrussell and Rocky Davis led our two sides to victory over Scone, winning by 46 shots to 25.

The Final against Wallerwang was a nail-biter, played with great sportsmanship by both sides.  Wallerwang got away to a big lead early, leading 25-12 at the mid way point (24 ends). Both of the Kew sides fought back, reducing the margin to 25-19 after 29 ends. Wallerwang held the lead by 5 shots (36-31), with only 3 ends remaining.

What a finish! Wayne Thrussell’s team needed to pull out all stops. They won the 40th end by 4 shots, and the 41st by 2 shots, to finally have a narrow lead of one shot. In the final end, “Chicka” Thompson put a bowl onto the jack to put pressure on Wallerwang, who responded to be holding shot. Wayne then put down a bomb to reclaim 2 shots in the final end. Kew had fought back to win 39 to 36.

Kew “the friendly club” had played an unbelievable final series, to claim the NSW State Men’s Div 4 Pennant.

A special thanks to Laurieton United Services Club (LUSC) and Kew Country Club, for the kind donation of the jackets, and continued support of Kew Bowling Club.
