Port City WBC September Newsletter

PRESIDENT DEB’S BITS AND PIECES

Dreams don't work unless you do!!!
This month has seen the unveiling of all the hard work in doing up our beautiful Port City Bowling Club.  Like a butterfly it has emerged from within its cocoon and wow what a knockout.  Congratulations to the Board of Directors and Management for their fine work.

And, finally, I have had my on and off again surgery.  It is now just a matter of time and I am sure I will be back on the greens enjoying our favourite game.  Hopefully better than ever.  Thank you to all of you for your kind thoughts.  It's really nice to know that so many care!!!

SAYING OF THE MONTH……………….Every accomplishment starts with a decision to try.

SELECTORS' REPORT - Chairperson, Shirley Devine

We have been advised that our State Pennant allocation for 2017 is:
Grade 1 -1 side
Grade 2 - 2 sides
Grade 3 - 1 side
Grade 4 - 1 side

As well, the Hastings/Haven District intends to run a Grade 5 pennant for players whose affiliation date is later than 31.12.10.  All sides will consist of 8 players.

We would like to field all six sides.  This will require 48 names on the list by the cut-off date of 14th October.  If we are short of that, the side we drop has to be Grade 4.
It is an honour to be chosen to represent your club so please give serious consideration to adding your name to the list on the notice board.

The criteria for pennant selection is on the board, directly above the list of names.

UMPIRES CORNER - Jenny Wallis
This is a follow up regarding last month's rule of foot faulting in last month's newsletter -

If the umpire or opponent notices a player repeatedly foot faulting that player can be given a warning by the umpire in the presence of the skip or coach.  On each occasion after this the umpire must have the player's bowl stopped and declared dead.

PRACTICE/ COACHING

Friday Morning 10am with Margaret Doyle

The subject of luck is a common one around bowling greens.

The bowl that is a dead draw is not subject to luck at all, even in wind or around an obstacle, it is the bowler's assessment of the shot and the intention behind it that determines its success. (Of course in heavy gusty wind luck plays a part).

As Arnold Palmer once replied to a spectator at a major golf tournament (who had suggested his shot was a lucky one),” The more I practice, the luckier I get."

To everyone celebrating their birthday during September, we hope you have a very special one
To all our members not in the best of health
at the moment we wish you a speedy recovery
and back to good health very soon.

A special mention to President Debbie, Frances Green, Barbara Owens and Margaret Edwards.  Hope to see you all back on the greens soon.

  Cheers,
Gail Carmody
