Breaking news for Port City is that we have won the hosting rights to the RNSWBA State “7” a side junior championships in August 2012. All zones in the state participate in this most important event on the bowls calendar.

Pennant trials for Grades 6&7 bowlers will be played on Tuesday 7^th February 2012 starting at 5-00 p.m. with dress neat casual.

Grades 1 to 5 will be having an in house trial on Saturday 11^th February 2012 starting at 1-00 p.m. with dress being club colors or whites. Please assist the selectors, by ticking your name as soon as possible to indicate that you are available for trials and pennant games.

Stockham & Baldwin Take Out State Pairs Title

A Great Program for 2012

The Port City Bowling Club have gained the rights to host a number of prestigious bowls events in 2012.

Just announced by the RNSWBA is the - 7 "A" Side Junior State Championships for 2012. This brings bowlers from all over the state to compete in this most sought after junior event that is to be held from Friday 10th August through to Sunday 12th August 2012.

This event runs along with other major bowling events such as the Ladies 83rd State Carnival in May with over 1200 lady bowlers participating. The NSW State Greenkeepers Carnival will be held also in May 2012 & 2013.

The RNSWBA State Pennant for grade 7 players will be held from 3rd August through to 6th August 2012. Teams will be from all over state that have won their respective zone titles.

To finish off what will be a great year for Port City is the Mixed Pairs Event that is played at the three local clubs in late June and early July 2012.

Port City WBC News 26th January

The rain came tumbling down on Tuesday and unfortunately there were no bowls for the day.

Exciting news last week when two Port City teams vied for the honour of winning the

District Pairs. Excellent bowls by both teams with Morgan Solman-Stewart and Janine

Stockham being the victors over Judy Brady and Barbara Barrett. Congratulations to

all four players and well done girls.

Just a reminder that Veterans Day will be held at Lake Cathie Bowling Club on Monday

2nd April - entries close on the 18th March. Morning tea 10 am - bowls 10.30 am and

lunch 12.30 pm. Be sure to put your name on the list.

Something different this year for our Easter Carnival on Saturday 7th April. It will be

a three bowl pairs event - 3 games of 12 ends. Entries to Carol Bowman 65849229.

Quite a few of the girls have had surgery recently and we all wish you a good recovery

Port City Men's Bowling Club Bulletin - February / March 2012

Welcome to 2012. I hope everyone had a great time over the Christmas holiday period, and is looking forward to having a fantastic bowling year. With the Pennant Season about to start, lets get behind the selectors and see if we can win a state flag this year. ( I know that the Pennant Season is called the “Silly Season”, so if you don’t get picked in the grade or team that you think you should have, SO WHAT, the sun will still rise tomorrow)!

SATURDAY AFTERNOON 2 BOWL PAIRS:

Because there are so many events planned for the next 6 weeks, such as District and Club Championships, Pennant trials etc, it has been decided to postpone the Saturday Afternoon format, until after the Pennant Season. If you are not involved in any of the above mentioned events, you can still play social bowls, or even arrange games between yourselves. Just see the bowls office to make arrangements.

OPEN DAY- SUNDAY 19^TH FEBRUARY.

The concept behind the “OPEN DAY” is an attempt to recruit new members into both the men’s and women’s clubs. Keep in mind that it is a ‘FAMILY FUN DAY’ with the emphasis on encouraging younger families to attend. That is why we are having a jumping castle and face painting for the children. Open days have proved to be highly successful when held at other clubs, so that is why the C.E.O. Larry and Marketing Manager Jordan together with bowling representatives have put together this concept.

The men’s and women’s club have thrown their support behind the management in running this day. You only have to look around our great club to see that there is only a handful of our members under the age of 70 years. If we don’t try different ideas, or think outside the square, in recruiting newmembers, the club wil eventually turn into a social club.

There are some members who are sceptical/knockers of the concept, so instead of being criticial, how about getting behind the club, inviting your friends, children or grandchildren if they live here and supporting the day.

Bowls Report – Charlie Buchanan

Well, it`s that time of the year again with Championships both at district and club level being played, which makes it very difficult trying to arrange pennant teams, it interferes with the selection of teams when players have to play district at the same time. January is the hottest time of the year, and effects senior players when they have to play four games over a weekend. Let`s hope the district has a look at playing conditions when organising next year`s fixtures.

Congratulation`s to Carol White (singles), Morgan Solman/Stewart and Janine Stockham (pairs) on winning the blue ribbon district championships Well done girl`s.

Some very important dates are coming up with “Australia Day” mixed bowls on Thursday 26^th with a billy tea and damper served from 9-00 am. This will be followed by bowls, dress up in your favored “Aussie “gear, prizes for the best dressed team and best male & female. The cost is only $12-00 per head which includes lunch, so get your name in by Tuesday 24^th January to secure your spot.

On Sunday 19^th February we are holding an “OPEN DAY” at the club. This is your chance as a member of the biggest and best club in Australia to do your bit. Invite your neighbour, friends and family to come along and support our recruitment drive. We are an aging club and we need new members, see what you can do for the club and not what the club can do for you for a change.

I would like to thank everyone, “you know who you are” that has helped in the organising of the corporate and barefoot bowls sessions over the past couple of months, club spirit shown by you has been wonderful, keep it up all. The new corporate season starts on Thursday 9^th February 2012 and we need teams to compete, this has been a most successful event, so please get the message out to the public and local business houses so that we can have another successful season. This year will be just as busy as last year, with the big events being Ladies 83^rd State Carnival, Grade 7 State Pennant Play-Offs, NSW Greenkeeper`s State Carnival, Insurance Council Carnival, NSW State Juniors v Combined High Schools along with all our other major men`s and women`s tournaments.

This is your club so let`s all work together, and enjoy each other`s company, in playing at the best club in the Port Macquarie area “GOOD BOWLING in 2012”!

Greens Report - Greenkeeper Nigel

The number three green will be back in play on Sunday 22^nd, and number two green is almost ready, and should be back in play very shortly. That terrible fungus “Ground Pearl” has again been spotted on very hot days in certain areas on greens one and five. I have put in place a special programme to deal with the fungus, but I am not really sure how effective it will be. It is a process of wait and see, but I will be endeavouring to do everything in my power to stop it spreading. Both of these greens will go out for renovation as soon as number two comes back in.

In early February I will commence a programme of grooming and dethatching of green four and then shortly after I will do the same thing to greens two and three

Port City WBC News 19th January

President Shirley gave a warm welcome to the players who had entered the District Pairs on Tuesday with the hope that the day would remain dry. Social players unfortunately did not have a full game because of the torrential downpour that occurred during the morning and therefore were forced to leave the green early.

Very exciting news this week, two of our Port City girls contested the final of the District Singles Championship with a win to Carol White and a very formidable opponent Margaret Walsh. Congratulations to you both.

Pat Morrison and Trish Mitchell were welcomed back to bowls and the lucky rink winners were -

For those members who have entered Pennant this year, there will be a Pennant training session held each Friday at 10 am, please put your name on the list on the board, you will find it is very worthwhile.

On Australia Day Thursday 26th January there will be a triples event, ladies, mens and mixed with damper, golden syrup and billy tea at 9 am - bowls 10 am and then a BBQ lunch. Come dressed in your best AUSSIE gear. A great day is to be had by all.

After social bowls on Tuesday next our umpires have agreed to give any player some tuition in the finer points of measuring. As the pennant season is just around the corner ít will be a great advantage to you and your team if this art can be done correctly.

Nerida and Ted Warby have now moved into St Agnes Village. They have been staunch supporters of all club events for many years and we wish them much happiness and good health in their new home.

To any of our members not enjoying the best of health we send our loving thoughts and best wishes to you for a good recovery and may each day be a good one for you.

After reading the bowls reports in today's Port News I realised I had listed. in error, Anthony as playing out of Westport rather than his nominated club Kew. My apologies to Anthony and all my good friends at Kew.

With warm and humid conditions and little breeze , President Shirley welcomed

players who had entered the District Singles Championship as well as 32 social

ladies last Tuesday. It was great to see Hilary O'Neile back after a long absence.

DUE TO A MISUNDERSTANDING IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT THERE WILL BE SOCIAL

BOWLS AS USUAL NEXT TUESDAY 17th JANUARY. PLEASE CONTACT THE CLUB IN THE

USUAL WAY.

Diaries are available from Secretary Judy for the events in 2012. As Veteran's Day

will be held at Lake Cathie on Monday 2nd April, Judy would also like to hear from

any member who has celebrated her 80th birthday between the dates of 4th April

2011 and 2nd April 2012 on 65841440 so that arrangements can be made for you to

receive your Veterans Badge on that day.

For those members who have entered Pennant this year, there will be a Pennant

training session held each Friday at 10am, please put your name on the list on the

board, you will find it is very worthwhile.

Also if you have a medical problem that excludes you from eating the food provided

by the Club you have been listed to play at, a Doctor's Certificate is required for you

to have an exemption which should be given to our Secretary Judy.

On Australia Day Thursday 26th January there will be a triples event, ladies, mens and

mixed with damper, golden syrup and billy tea at 9 am - bowls 10 am and then a BBQ

lunch. Come dressed in your best AUSSIE gear. But if you would like a more relaxed

Australia Day, Robyn Biddle has Champagne breakfast with bacon and eggs at

Settlement Point 8 am start. Names to either Robyn or Marie Bignell .

Easter Saturday will be a ladies 3 bowl pairs event this year on 7th April. Carol Bowman

has the nomination forms for this event. As it fills reasonably quickly get your teams

together as soon as possible.

Nerida and Ted Warby have now moved into St Agnes Village. They have been

staunch supporters of all our club events for many years and we wish them much

The break-up party was a tremendous success, thank you to everyone concerned. What can we say about the concert - fantastic! Many thanks for a terrific day. Well done to everyone who donated goods to the Salvation Army and who contributed to the $950 cheque which we were able to present to Major Brett.

We hope you all had a lovely Christmas and are fit and ready to get back into bowling.

Pennants are just around the corner and we are hoping for more flags in 2012 to add to our collection.

Happy New Year to everyone and good bowling in 2012.

Summer has finally arrived and mother nature treated the 46

players present on Tuesday to a beautiful day for bowls.

Lucky rinks were -

1st Jenny Wallis - Margaret Doyle - Kerry Bolsover

who had the opportunity of picking up the Lucky number for the

Jackpot. Unfortunately they were not successful and it now stands

at $360 on the next draw.

2nd Trish Wellings - Beth Hicks - Jan Drewson

It was announced that Thursday Ladies Pairs resumes this week.

Also Ladies Triples will recommence on Saturday at 9.30 am.

After a short break Sunday Mixed Tripes will be available from

this Sunday 8th January.

District Singles begin on Tuesday 10th January and District Pairs

begin Tuesday 17th January. ALL DISTRICT GAMES will begin with

roll - ups at 8.50am. Check the board for venues.

As there will be limited space available for the District Pairs on Tuesday

17th January NO SOCIAL BOWLS will be available in the morning but roll-ups

are allowed after the morning pairs games have been completed.

Port City WBC 13th December 2011

Christmas songs echoed across the greens for our Break Up Party on Tuesday 13th. Colourful hats and shirts with bangles and beads made the day so special as we rolled our bowls for the many spiders with much excitement from the many winners.

After the game President Shirley welcomed our guests Patron Lorna, Life members Robyn and Norma, Salvation Army representative Major Brett, President of the Men's Club Reg, and Bowls Organiser Charlie.

We were thrilled to present Major Brett with $950 as well as toys and non perishable goods for those less fortunate than ourselves at this special time. The generosity of our ladies far exceeded our expectations.

These days just don't happen without the help of our wonderful team of helpers. The tables were beautifully decorated by Jan Gauld and her team and lunch deliciously prepared by Margaret Edwards and her team. Flowers attended to by Hazel Durrant, music Fay Martin, raffles Rhonda, Marie and Carol, Selectors Barbara Barrett and her team and the many behind the scenes girls on the day.

for being MC, Anne Connell music, Margaret Doyle props, and the wonderfully talented cast of girls under the

direction of President Shirley which was received with much laughter and applause.

Bowls will return officially on 3rd January but if you would like a game over the Festive Season check the board

for available time.

District Singles will be played on 10th January 2012 and District Pairs 17th January 2012.

We were thrilled to see so many of the non playing members present at the Party and just a reminder that the next

non playing members morning tea will be 10th January 2012.

Graeme Light - Winner Major Singles

The Port City Men's BC held their popular and hugely successful Presentation and Hamper Day on Saturday 3rd December.

The weather was kind with sunny skies and the greens were full for an enjoyable social game of bowls. No winners or losers today with everyone taking home some Christmas goodies.

The Championship winners and runners up were presented with their awards for their achievements on the greens for 2011. Click here for full details and also see the photo albums.

Graeme Light took out the coveted major singles with a win over Kevin Bramble in the final. Graeme won through the many rounds of this championship against the best in the club.

The 2011 "Player of the Year" went to John Hall. John was on the winning teams for both the Major Pairs and Major Triples.

The "Clubman of the Year" award went to Ken Taylor for his untiring and excellent work as a coach. Ken spends numerous hours using his coaching skills to help new bowlers of all levels.

Well done to John and Ken for these well deserved special awards.

On Monday Port City hosted Encouragement Day which is for bowlers who have been playing less than 6 years. President Shirley welcomed teams from 21 different clubs from as far afield as Gloucester and Forster in the south right through to South West Rocks in the north.

Congratulations to a composite team from Manning Point/Old Bar Beach who came out overall winners. They were Lorraine Delaney, Margaret Bryant, Chris Downey and Judy Purnell.

It was a near perfect day although a little too hot for some but everyone appeared to be enjoying themselves, and the greens looked terrific with all the different coloured uniforms. After the morning game we enjoyed a delicious lunch prepared by our social committee headed by Margaret Edwards. We also have to thank our Carnivals Secretary Carol Bowman who did a wonderful job in filling all the teams taking all the entries and organizing composite teams between other clubs. Ingrid Code, chairperson of match and Margaret Walsh working out all the results Thank you to Val Byrnes and Heather Clarke for umpiring.

We were very generous in the raffles and $200 club – all but one prize went to our visitors.

Many thanks to our sponsors Denis Roberson - Australian Unity & Reg McGlashan - Aussie Home Loans who were in attendance to present the prizes. Without sponsors these events could not be run.

On Tuesday we were very lucky again with the weather – 2 days in a row, how about that. There were 52 players and the lucky rink winners were: -

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER

It is very pleasing to seemembers supporting the Saturday afternoon format. There has been somecritiscism, however the feedback has been very positive. The committee may haveto look at a different format during the pennant season, but until then we willcontinue with this format.

At the last meeting of theboard, it was decided to defer the alterations/extensions of the club until atlater date. The decision to defer was made until there is a definite outcome tothe Goverments mandatory pre-commitment plan for poker machines legislation.

Congratulations to theladies committee and the board on securing the prestigious “ Ladies PremierCup” event , which is the first time that this event has been held outside Sydney. It was great to see our own ladies holdingtheir own against the Australian and State players. The eventual winner of thecarnival was the team from the “Country”. The women from Port City, namely, Judy Brady,Carol White, Lynne Thompson and Debbie Amor played some excellent bowls, socongratulations ladies from the men's club.

I must congratulate all thegreenkeepers for the preparations of the greens this year. There have been alarge number of tournaments held during the year, and their dedication andworkmanship that goes into the preparation of the greens has been excellent.Players from other clubs who play in these tournaments have been verycomplimentary about the greens. So a job well done boys.

Well what a busy year we have had with a large number ofevents being held. I would like to thank all those members that helped inrunning these tournaments. Talking of events, what about the Ladies Premier Cupthat was held just recently at our club, to see the cream of Australian ladiesbowlers at our club was amazing, I won`t name any of the players, but the sportsmanship shown by all playerswas a pleasure to watch. Port City were delighted that the Premier Cup Ladies Committeeselected our club to host the event for the first time out of Sydney and we hope to keep this relationshipinto the future. What about the music provided by our resident DJ Gerry, itreally helped in the atmosphere of the event – something different eh!

In 2012, we have a number of major events that we arehosting including the Grade 7 State Play-offs, Stockland Open Singles, HastingsCouncil Fundraising Day, NSW Greenkeepers State Carnival, Ladies StateCarnival, Australian Unity Prestige Pairs, Toohey`s Grade 6 & 7 Triples,Port Macquarie Mixed Pairs, RNSWBA State Juniors versus Combined High Schools,Sydney Insurances Offices Carnival, Zone 8 RSL, Hastings versus MacleayDistrict (ladies).

Our Club is undoubtedly the home of corporate and barefootbowls in Port Macquarie, we have bookings for nearly day leading up to Christmas.Just a reminder that our season six corporate bowls starts on February 9^th2012. If any member knows of any companyor business that would like to play let the bowls office know so that we cancontact them.

We have a friendly pennant trial match against Taree Leaguesat Taree on Saturday 17^th December (see notice board). Some eveningtrial matches may be played in readiness for the 2012 season, so please makeyourself available if selected, so that selectors can evaluate your form. Ifyou don`t trial when selected don`t blame us. The selectors are trying to dothe best that they can for the Port City Bowling Club and to you the players. Withthis my last bowls report for 2011, I would like to wish all members a very HappyChristmas and New Year for 2012.

Greens Report -Greenkeeper Nigel

As you are well aware the renovations to the greens are wellunderway. If all goes well weather wise, all greens , that is No.’s 4 & 3& 2 ,will have been renovated and back into full use by the end ofFebruary. After those greens are back in use, I will then take out No.1.

It has been a very busy time for our greens, not only do wehave our normal social bowlers, but have barefoot and corporate bowlers takingto the greens on Thursday nights. We have a great amount of Christmas partiesbooked in, especially during the weekends. The greens are holding up very welland we should be able to cope.

The fungus “Ground Pearl” has been sighted on the schoolgreen, however we will monitor it very closely, and carry out the maintenanceprogramme when it required. Hopefully it won’t be a major problem. The carpetaround the No.1. Green on the southern ditch will be replaced during therenovations.

Port City "Classic" Open Singles

Entries are now open for the 2012 Port City "Classic" Open Singles. With a total of $16,500 prize money, including $4,000 for the winner, this tournament will be held from Monday 30th April - Thursday 3rd May, 2012. Entry is open to both male and female bowlers.

Port City's major singles tournament, known in the past few years as the Aevum Living Singles, saw David Holt defeat Rowan Brassey in 2010, then Rowan came back in 2011 to win against Ryan Bester in 2011.

This is an opportunity for local bowlers to test their skills against some of the best in country. Early entry is suggested to ensure a place in the first 2 days of qualifying sectional play.

Port City's Anna Davidson travelled to Shepparton in Victoria to play in the women's singles at the Victorian Open. The following is a brief summary from her husband and "manager", Phil.

"This week Anna went and played in the Victorian open. Anna won 2 of her first 3 games in the sectional rounds but was beaten by the eventual section winner Brenda Thompson who plays for Helensvale in Queensland and is a well credentialed player. Brenda progressed to the round of 32 and reached the quarter finals before losing to the eventual winner J Johnson".

Gala Day was held last Tuesday and President Shirley welcomed the President of Hastings Haven District Maureen Bradford as well as ladies from our District Clubs - Kew, Comboyne, Lake Cathie, North Haven, Panthers, Westport and Wauchope. After morning tea we all headed for the greens to try and win the many spiders donated by the members of Port City.

We had a very friendly game of bowls with lots of rivalry between the clubs and then adjourned to the clubhouse for lunch and the draw for the 18 tombola prizes.

100 Club winners - (5 draws of $20) Val Byrnes, Anne Wilson, Dolor Hodge, Gail Carmody and Helen Carr

50 Club winners - (3 draws) Norma Schwartz, Barbara Griffiths, Hazel Durrant

District President Maureen then presented her special prizes to Lead Heather Storier, Second Sue Holbert, Third Ingrid Code and Skip Betty Hodgson.

President Shirley then thanked all those members of Port City who had helped in any way to make this day the success that it was. District President Maureen was then presented with a cheque for $1350 after which she suitably responded.

Next Monday is Encouragement Day for bowlers under 6 years. So come along and support the bowlers of the future.

Tuesday is a normal bowls day 9.30 start. There will be the Quarterly Meeting after the game at 1.30 pm and you are requested to attend.

The list for the Christmas Break Up Party is now on the board so please put your name down. Date is 13th December - bowls $5 - lunch free. Those wishing to put in a single entry will be most welcome but otherwise you may put a team in of 4's.

Donations are now being sought for the Salvation Army toys for children or adults, also tinned or non perishable goods will be gratefully received and the boxes will be near the selector's office for collection.

Special birthday wishes this week to Dorothy Hopkins and Anne Connell.

It is with a great deal of sadness we have to advise that two of our esteemed members, Molly Wilkinson and Wendy Austin, passed away this week. Our sincere condolences to their respective families.

Many of our members are not enjoying the best of health at the moment and we send our loving wishes to you all and hope each day is a better one for you.

Congratulations to Daphne

Daphne Shaw, North Haven BC, has been included in the inaugural inductees for the BCiB Hall of Fame. This is a well deserved recognition of Daphne's individual performance and contribution to the sport.

Daphne is still active in her club's activities and was a member of the Country Side that recently won the Ladies Premier Cup.

The Consistency Singles final was held last Thursday and it proved to be a great game between Karen McFarlane and Margaret Doyle. Congratulations to Karen who was in fine form that day and was the winner of the trophy for this year. Many thanks to Judy Scholz for umpiring.

Tuesday there was only a small field of bowlers because of the Premier Cup being held at our Club.

Next Tuesday 22nd November is Gala Day. There will be a trading table and President Shirley would like donations of plants, cakes, pickles, jams and sweets. Cost for the day is $12 - money raised to go to the Hastings Haven District. There will also be a tombola and spiders on the green.

Members are asked to put their names in by Friday afternoon for this event.

We have many members who are not well and we send our Best wishes to you all for a good recovery and hope to see you soon at the Club for a chat.

Corporate Challenge - Round 5

The wild weather held off and the 5th round of the Corporate Challenge was played on Thursday evening at Port City.

The "Travelling Bowlers" are leading the way with 30 points +109 shots followed by the "Vintage Ports" team on 27 points +30 shots. "Right Bias" has now dropped back to 4th spot with 27 points +21.

Country Wins Ladies Premier Cup

Winning Country Side - Ladies Premier Cup 2011

The final day of the Independent Gaming Ladies Premier Cup was completed today at the Port City Bowling Club. The skies were threatening but the rain held off and games 5 & 6 were completed.

The Country side came home with a strong win in the final game to pip Cabramatta at the post 28 to 27 points to take out the trophy in the 2011 cup. With scores tied 22 all after this morning's games, the Country side had a win on all rinks to score the maximum 6 points for the win.

Arlene Jeffrey's team from Cabramatta continued on their winning way with 2 wins today and recording 6 wins out of 6 games for the competition.

It has been an exciting tournament with great bowls & a strong friendly competitive spirit from all sides that has been appreciated by local spectators.

Ladies Premier Cup - Day 2

Day 2 of the Independent Gaming Ladies Premier Cup was completed at the Port City Bowling Club. The weather proved a challenge to all teams with thunderstorms and rain threatening early in the afternoon. The skies cleared and game 4 was completed in the afternoon.

The Cabramatta team maintained their lead but were challenged by the Country team for the lead. Cabramatta are on 17 points with Country only 0.5 points behind on 16.5. Arlene Jeffrey's team have been a solid performer for Cabramatta with the only team scoring a win in all 4 rounds to date. St Johns Park follow with 8.5 and then Merrylands with 6.0 points.

The Independent Gaming Ladies Premier Cup commenced today at Port City under sunny skies and a challenging wind. Teams from Cabramatta, Merrylands, St Johns Park and a Country side play a round robin with 2 games each day from Tuesday to Thursday.

With scoring based on rink wins plus side wins Cabramatta have had a strong start and are leading with 11.0 points after the first 2 games. With a loss on one rink only in the first game they showed their strength in all teams in the side.

St Johns Park follow with 6.5 points, then the Country side on 5.5 and Merrylands with 1.0 points.

Roche Takes Out Minor Singles Title

The final of the LNC District Minor Singles Champion of Club Champions was played at Westport this morning with Max Roche (Crescent Head) taking out the title 31 - 14. Max took an early lead over Paul Styles (Wauchope) and maintained the edge during the final.

The LNC District Minor Singles Champion of Club Champions commenced at Westport today with the quarter finals played this morning and the semi finals in the afternoon. The standard of play, on free running greens, was up to major singles finals in both rounds.

First prize in the raffle was a beautifully decorated Christmas cake made and donated by Beth Schubert and won by Joy Barry, 2nd Karen McFarlane - bottle of Champagne - 3rd Fay Martin handmade Christmas cards made by Margaret Walsh.

Bowls on TV

You may have watched the bowls on ABC 1 last Saturday after a break the previous Saturday. I believe the bowls will continue until Saturday the 14th December, then - "that's all folks".

The results of our little poll on this site indicates a strong majority of 97% want to see bowls continue on the ABC. These results are being forwarded to Bowls Australia to help with their efforts to continue the TV coverage.

Port City WBC News 4th November

Last week at the Hastings v Macleay inter-district competition, our club champion Carol White was runner-up in the Singles Championship. Congratulations to Jenny Roberts from Lake Cathie for winning this prestigious event. Our Port City Fours team contributed to the Hastings Haven overall victory.

136 members played in the Out-of-Hat Mixed Fours held last Saturday. Our thanks go to the Board for the generous prize money provided. Overall winners on the day were Paul Barry, Joan Bird, Barbara Owens, Frank Edwards.

Ladies Day gave way to Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday. A game of Mixed Triples was followed by a delicious lunch prepared by our Social Committee under the leadership of Margaret Edwards, and served by Jan Gauld and her helpers. Thanks to Board member Robyn Biddle for organising the excellent fashion parade which was sponsored by Blue Illusion.

Next Tuesday 8^th November is Out-of-Hat Fours for members only. Our previous attempt to hold this in August was stymied by rain. Hopefully the weather will be kinder next Tuesday for this popular event. We would like all players present for the draw at 9.00am. There will be two games of 15 ends, B.Y.O lunch and green fees as usual.

The monthly morning tea for non-bowlers will be on the same day (8^th November) at 10.am.

Arrangements are well in hand for the Ladies Premier Cup to be held at our club on November 15^th, 16^th & 17^th. This will be a rare opportunity for locals to see many of Australia’s top women bowlers – Karen Murphy, Lynsey Armitage, Maria Rigby, Willow Fong, Julie Keegan, Carmen Anderson, Arleen Jeffery – to name a few. We also have our own local girls of Debbie Amor, Lynne Thompson, Carol White & Judy Brady.

The Premier Cup is a Round Robin event and all 48 players will be playing two rounds on each of the three days. Only one green will be required (6rinks) so the club’s usual social bowls will be available for interested players.

To any of our members or their families who are not very well, we wish you a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing you back at the club soon.

A Deserved Life Membership for Reg.

" At the presentation following the Club Limited sponsored "members only day" on Saturday, 27th October the Senior Vice President of the Men's Bowling Club, Jim Cranna, addressed the 136 players present.

He told them that at the AGM of the men's club in July this year that 2 members were honoured with Life Membership. One was Alan Cutler who was presented with his at that time and the other was Reg Lucas who was in hospital at the time of the AGM. Jim cited Reg's outstanding service to the Men's Club over 14 years including 4 years as the Welfare Officer and the last 8 as President. Reg has been a tireless worker over the entire 14 years and has always worked in the best interest of all bowlers.

Reg received a rousing reception when he walked to the stage and had his life membership badge presented. He thanked everyone and made special mention of people who had welcomed him and guided him when he first joined the Club. He also praised his lovely wife of 52 years, June, for her unqualified support. It was wonderful recognition for a man who has worked tirelessly for the Club and, no doubt, will continue to do so."

The weather was kind to us today and the annual members only mixed fours was enjoyed by all. With $5,000 prize money there was a good turnout and the blind draw for all position gave everyone a chance.

Frank Edwards - Barbara Owens - Joan Bird & skip Paul Barry took out 1st place followed by Jim Cranna and Bob Bryson in 2nd and 3rd.

The men have 382 & the ladies have 223 with a combined total of 605 bowling members. Would this be a first for Port City Bowling Club and make us the largest or biggest club members wise club in Australia if not the World?

Greg Retires from the THBC

The October edition of the Queensland Bowls Magazine advises that Greg Kelly has announced his retirement from the position as Development Officer at the Tweed Heads Bowling Club.

Some quotations from the article indicate how much Greg will be missed: Greg Martin indicates "Greg is one of the most professional people I've ever come across. He just promotes the hell out of bowls".

Steve Glasson adds: "He's probably one of the best organisers going around." - Kelvin Kerkow indicated: "He has the most up-to-date information on tournaments around Queensland, NSW & the whole of Australia."

I would like to thank Greg, and his son Ashley, for the tremendous support they have given me personally, and our Club's "Latest Bowls News" blog for the past several years.

Greg has always given coverage to major tournaments at Port City when requested with his highlights on his moving banner and a link to our posts and photos. The number of visits to our site has gone up 4 or 5 fold when he has given a link.

I have used the Tweed Heads Bowls Club site as a guide for our blog in that Greg has promoted bowls in general rather than just his own club. When deciding if something should be posted I usually ask myself "would THBC include this on their site?".

Thanks again Greg, all the best in retirement, and we hope to see you in Port Macquarie if you come this way.

State & National Team Players at Port City

Karen Murphy, Claire Duke, Maria Rigby, Willow Fong, Katrina Wright, Julie Keegan & Beth Quinlan, to name a few, will be representing their club in the 2011 Ladies Premier Cup at Port City.

This promises to be one of best women's tournaments to be held in Port Macquarie with a wealth of bowls experience on show.

This tournament will be held from Tuesday 15th - Thursday 17th November with teams from Cabramatta, Merrylands, St Johns Park and a selected Country Side.

Interstate Bowlers Arm Tournament

Jim Lamb - NSW State Side

Jim Lamb, Port City, played in the Interstate Bowlers Arm Challenge Match between NSW & VIC on the 9th & 10th Oct. in Frankston, Victoria

Each squad consisted of 15 players (3teams of 5 players). Jim's team consisted of Allan Sterrett (Singles) James Lee, Jim Lamb, Ken Towers & Ray Callaghan.

On Sunday they played 4's and Singles and won all 6 games. On Monday Pairs & Triples. Pairs won 1, lost 1, & a draw. The Triples Jim was in won all 3 games. So 3 of them went in undefeated.

NSW won the big shield 429 point to Vic 331. Jim's team won a smaller trophy. There are negotiations going on to make it an Australian wide tournament and also an international tournament with New Zealand, England & South Africa.

The new members afternoon tea was held with committee.

NSW Women's State Fours Finals

State Fours Winners from Raymond Terrace

The Port City team of Judy Brady, Maureen Cutting, Barbara Barrett & Debbie Amor did the club proud with a win at the State Finals played at the Tuncurry Bowling Club on the 8th and 9th October.

Our team had a win over Molong 22 - 17 before going down to Wiseman Park Wollongong City 20 - 17 in the quarter finals. The final saw Raymond Terrace defeat Cabramatta 23 - 15.

The Port City's pairs team of Pat Light, skip, and Karen McFarlane progressed to the State finals of the Women's Pairs at Tuncurry last week.

In the first round they defeated the team from Gordon 19 - 9 and then went down to the highly rated team of Katrina Wright and Kelsey Cottrell from St Johns Park.

On Tuesday 11^th October there were 62 social bowlers at Port Macquarie City.

Semi Finals of the Minor Singles were played: Rhonda Evans defeated Lorraine Cannon and Adriana Cutler defeated Barbara Owens.

One game of the Consistency Singles was played: Judy Brady defeated Margaret Edwards.

The Consistency Singles will continue next Tuesday 18^th October.

Winners of the social bowls were on Rink 9 Nancy Kennedy, Dulcie Holihan and Elaine Sinclair.

2^nd on Rink 8 Lorraine Conroy, Helen Cooper and Barbara Griffiths.
