Australian Open - here come the Port City teams !

Singles - Anna Davidson

Pairs - Debbie Amor (skip), left, & Lynne Thompson

Triples - Debbie Amor (skip), left, Lynne Thompson & Carol Bowman

Port City will be well represented in the women's draw at the 2010 Australian Open to be held on February 14 to 20 in Victoria. This is the major 2010 tournament for Bowls Australia with total prize money of $120,000.

The Open will be held at the Shepparton Park BC (primary club) and the Mooroopna BC. I would assume that the early rounds for some events will be split between the 2 clubs due to the number of entries.

In the women's draw the entries will include those who have qualified in rounds such as the Port City qualifications and some direct entries for previous winners and top ranked players. The total entries for the women's draw will be:

Singles - 64 players
Pairs - 32 teams
Triples - 32 teams

As we saw at Port City the format will continue to be the exciting sets play with a tie breaker. It will be knockout play so it is "make or break" in each game.

Australian Open Qualifying - Triples

Debbie Amor

Beth Schubert

Lynne Thompson

Carol Bowman
The Australian Open qualifying rounds for women's triples were played today at Port City under free running greens, increased temperatures and the wind was back to test the bowlers again.

The Port City team of Carol Bowman, Lynne Thompson & Debbie Amor (skip) won the sectional play today with wins over Donna Montague, Jan Anderson & Jane Leader (skip) from Inverell and the other Port City team with Betty Hodgson, Barbara Gunn & Beth Schubert (skip).

Scores were:

Debbie Amor (Port City) def. Jane Leader (Inverell) 6 - 5, 7 - 9, 2 - 1
Debbie Amor (Port City) def. Beth Schubert (Port City) 10 - 4, 9 - 3

Debbie & Lynne teamed up yesterday to take out the qualifying round for the pairs so they will be both the pairs and triples next year at the Open.

My apologies to the gals from Inverell for not including any photos of their play but I wasn't able to be at the club for the first game. I believe some group photos were taken and I'll include them in the bowls photo album when they are available.

The singles qualifying rounds at Port City were completed today under trying conditions with a very strong wind.

Port City's "comeback kid" Anna Davidson showed her competitive spirit with 2 games going through to the tie breaker. In these games Anna lost the first set scoring only 1 point in each set, then came back to take the second set and the tie breaker.

Section 1:

Chairman Bob Langham at the Lights On ceremony

Players enjoying the ability to play into the evening

Last night, Wednesday the 11th November, Port City BC had the official opening for the new lights on their greens.

Chairman of the Board, Bob Langham, in a brief address declared "Let There Be Light". Bob indicated the new lights now provided an opportunity to expand the twilight bowls program and importantly allowed the club to host National and State Association events where lighting was a prerequisite to holding many events.
